I began painting, principally as a hobby. and won a scholarship to Middlesbrough College of art. While living in the industrial north east of England, and instinctively fascinated by the nature of wild places, I began traveling to the far north west of Scotland. My ambition was no more complex than simply painted the landscapes as close to their appearance as my skills would permit. In a courageous or desperate change of direction, I gave up my practice and the business contacts and moved my family to the far north west, among complete strangers, to be near the landscape that inspired and consoles me. I have opened a gallery in my tiny village in the far North West, surely doomed to never pay it's way, being so far removed any centers of population.
I developed a technique very early on in my career illustrating for architects practice’s using a tradition water colour practice, stretching water colour paper but using a Procion dye, as the medium. This accounts for the particular brightness and luminosity of my work. When beginning my career working offshore, I found this technique lent itself admirably to representing sub sea compositions. It is possible to overlay many transparent layers to give the feel of underwater without compromising any of the important technical engineering detail.
All of my paintings are the same size, and all use the same technique. I am able to print indistinguishable full size copies of the originals, on Epson Watercolour paper using exclusively genuine Epson inks, and a very good printer.
